Ezetimibe is a medication prescribed to treat different conditions related to high cholesterol.
Medication is primarily used to reduce levels of different types of cholesterol in patients whose cholesterol levels are elevated. High levels of certain types of cholesterols are linked to increased cardiovascular events and death. Ezetimbe can lower these cholesterols but it has not been linked to a reduction in morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular outcomes.
Works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. Cholesterol is absorbed in the small intestine from the diet and when it is secreted by the body in the bile. Its target protein is the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) sterol transporter, which is responsible for absorbing cholesterol in the small intestine.
